Here is the painting that I have been working on for the last month and it is finally finished!!! It was very labor intensive and definitely a challenge, but I am really happy with the final piece. If you have any comments or critiques let me know. I want feedback.

Valley of Fire

Justin and I went up to Valley of Fire state park last weekend. I wanted to find some dead Buckhorn Cholla (a type of cactus that is all over the Mojave) for a series that I am going to be working on over the next couple of weeks. When they die they leave behind this really intricate wood skeleton. I am going to be working on a painting using this imagery and also some pieces using fiber.

I've started a series based on found objects from the desert. These are a mix of paintings and drawings. Until recently I had almost forgotten how much I enjoy working on an actual drawing instead of a quick sketch that turns into a painting.

Lately I have been visiting antique shops and malls and I have been drawn to all the vintage handkerchiefs. They are so delicate and detailed and sometimes personal. I worked on this with these handkerchiefs in mind. The bird itself is appliquéd to the stretched fabric, stuffed with batting, and then hand embroidered. The stretched fabric is folded and hand sewn in place.

pillow

This pillow is inspired by Akiko Mano's book Linen Wool Cotton. She uses mostly raw and natural colors, which I also chose to use, but in moderation. I really like this color scheme of muted blues and greens because it is so soothing and soft to look at. My favorite part about this pillow are the buttons which I bought in Toronto, but hadn't found a use till now. Currently I am working on a purse that is also from a pattern in Akiko Mano's book.
